U.S. Army Spc. Adam S. Hamilton, 22, of Kent, gave his life in Haji Ruf, Afghanistan, defending the United States of America. His unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a night mission on May 28, 2011. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was one of the top marksmen in his unit and was assigned as a sniper.

Adam was a four year starter in hockey and lacrosse and played football his senior year.

Adam Hamilton completed his ice hockey career at Roosevelt High School in February 2007. During his four seasons, Adam led the ice hockey program to three league championships, a Baron Cup title, and an OHSAA Sectional championship. From November or 2003 to February of 2007, the Roosevelt Ice Hockey team compiled a record of 87 wins, 30 losses, and 3 ties. In the Roosevelt Ice Hockey program’s forty-year existence, no four-year stretch has ever matched 87 victories. Adam Hamilton was a dominating force, whose skill set and overall hockey-playing ability was seldom or never matched when his team took the ice. According to Coach Ben Barlow, “He was both feared and respected by the Greater Cleveland ice hockey community. Adam Hamilton was by far the most talented ice hockey player that I have ever coached at Roosevelt High School. As time passes, it will not be the long list of game winning goals and amazing plays that I will remember about Adam, it will be his charisma, his unbelievable confidence in his abilities, his sense of humor, his leadership skills, and his love and devotion to his teammates, coaches, and school.”

“One thing you have to always remember is you all are a family.  Every time you put on that jersey you look out for one another.  Great teams are structured with great relationships on the ice, on the bench, and in the locker room. Life moves by fast men, but one thing you will always have are the brothers next to you.”        Adam S. Hamilton 12/31/10

In football, in his first season, he was named All PTC Conference as a Tight End and also played outside linebacker. According to Coach John Nemec, “Adam Hamilton was an excellent football player who had a knack for making big plays. His athleticism, however, was overshadowed by his ability to lead. Adam had great charisma–during a games’ most critical point he would “rally the troops” to achieve success. Our “Championship Season” was the direct result of the positive leadership of our senior class. Adam stood at the top of this group of outstanding young men. His will to win was contagious and he challenged us all to do our best. He earned the respect of his coaches, his peers, and the entire Rough Rider Community. Adam will be in our hearts forever.”

Adam was at his best when he was on the lacrosse field making the unselfish next pass. He made others playing around him better. He led the state and set a school record for assists his senior year with 52 and led the team in winning loose ground balls. He captained Roosevelt in 2007 to their highest state ranked season, earning All American honors. He was also the offensive Player of the Year in Northeast Ohio that year. His junior year he injured his knee and only played in 7 games. Adam was second on the team in scoring as a sophomore leading Roosevelt to the State Championship game in Division 1B. He was a natural-born leader and warrior on the lacrosse field. He had a swagger about him that drove opponents crazy, but after the game was respected by all who witnessed his gritty determination.

While the Kent community mourns the loss of Adam, the legacy of how he competed can be passed on. Listed below are some of Adam’s hockey and lacrosse accomplishments.
