Game Recap

The Kent Lady Roughriders Varsity Soccer team continued its winning ways by beating local rivals the Aurora Lady Greenmen 2-1 in a key suburban league contest last night. The victory was a hard fought battle over a team that was coached last year by current Kent coach Jerry Shutway. Coach Shutway had been with Aurora for 3 years, leading them to the league championship two years ago and league runners-up last year before taking over the program here at Kent this season.

“This win was important for a number of reasons”, said Shutway. “Last year Kent had lost to Aurora 5-2 and so this victory helps soothe some of the frustrations of last year’s loss. It also reaffirmed confidence in the possession oriented style of soccer we are wanting to play here at Roosevelt, and most importantly this win is a big step in our quest for a league title.”

Kayla Fischer had another big night scoring both of Roosevelt’s goals while setting up a few other opportunities for her teammates. Kendra Kline had an instrumental role in how Kent dominated the midfield, while assisting on Kayla’s first goal. Although the roughrider defense of Mariah Hersman, Maria Young, Kylie Hudson, Carley Wolfgang, and Dom Lampe gave up a goal in the first couple minutes of the game, they kept Aurora at bay the whole rest of the game by reading the game and positioning themselves to intercept passes and keep the ball in the offensive half of the field.

Goal keeper Liz Hartung made a number of critical saves the few times that Aurora was able to get close enough to threaten the Roughrider goal. Perhaps her most exciting save came with just 2 minutes to go in the game, when she had to dive behind her through a crowd of teammates and opposing forwards to get to a shot that was rolling toward her goal line.

The Lady Roughriders next opponent is an away match at Green High School on Monday.
